Marketing Your Home? Do 72 Percent Of Consumers Prefer Print?

If you are getting ready to start marketing your home for sale, you are probably curious about how to sell a home in 2013 and specifically what needs to be done to outshine your competition.

No matter the market conditions, there are homes that are similar enough to yours that become your competition whenever one hits the market or when one changes their asking price to your present price. It is these similar homes that you must "out market" if you want to get top dollar for your home.

With that in mind, I received an email this morning that advised me that "72% of consumers prefer print!" and that magazines deliver ads to a very specific market. Seriously!

Marketing Your Home With Print Advertising In 2013

Marketing Your Home Print AdvertsingFirst of all, Johannes Gutenberg would be very proud and grateful that you continue to use his 15th Century technology when marketing your home.

I suspect the sender of the email would tell you to ignore the "hype" about this passing trend (the internet) and the NAR surveys which show 94% of buyers are using the internet.

Perhaps the sender thinks that many real estate agents are part-time and might ignorantly throw some money at magazine ads so that you will think they are "marketing your home."

3 Reasons Why Marketing Your Home With Printed Magazines Makes Sense

Marketing Your Home To Internet Buyers

So the email went on to boast the big three factors that support marketing your home with printed magazines:

  1. Targeted Audience - Magazines deliver ads to a very specific market. Yeah, they hit people who are reading a magazine. If you understand anything about the three stages of the homebuying process, then you know that marketing a home to anybody in the first two stages WILL NOT SELL YOUR HOME. So that begs a question ... Do you think "ready buyers (those home buyers in the final stage of the homebuying process) are going to a magazine for the "up to the date listings in the Tallahassee MLS" or do you think they are using the internet?
  2. Credibility - People think of magazines as a more credible source. A source for what, fiber? The most common complaint about internet property search tools is that their information is out of date. Many of the large aggregate sites only update their data weekly ... Well just how often do you think these print magazines are updated? In fact, the reason that we have launched our BRAND NEW continuously updated property search tool is so that we could deliver the most up to date listings in the Tallahassee real estate market. Our new site features listings that are not under contract and are actively listed for sale. How does this compare to a monthly magazine?
  3. Portable - People take magazines everywhere. Well, I'm betting that one day they will invent a tablet PC that people take everywhere too. That way, when people move to the third stage of the home buying process, they don't have to rely on their Doctor's office having the most up-to-date housing magazine sitting in the reception room. Maybe Apple will be able to solve this problem for us ... Of course, is it likely that buyers in the final stage plan on a more formal home selection process utilizing the assistance of a real estate buyer's agent (who most likely won't be leafing through magazines with them).

My Best Advice For Marketing Your Home Today

You can find out so much information about marketing your home on the internet, you just have to commit to spending some time to learn. The average home seller will spend more than $6,000 to sell a home, so a little preparation makes sense.

The greatest cost in selling a home is the money left behind due to hiring an inferior real estate agent. 96% of real estate agents sell too few of homes to be qualified to negotiate on your behalf, so why not spend some time with Google to find the top agents in your market?

If you do not have the time to research to the level that you would like, just drop me a note and tell me in which market you need to sell a home. I have an extensive network of real estate professionals who understand marketing your home on the internet, and they will be happy to interview with you for the job of selling your home.
