Buck Lake offers a ‘Town and Country” lifestyle, the convenience of nearby amenities, well-rated schools and a proximity to both downtown Tallahassee and an I-10 entrance.

While it doesn’t have formal boundaries, the area we think of as “Buck Lake” includes the nine mile length of Buck Lake Road from Mahan Drive to Capitola Road, and the land that extends up to two miles north and two miles south of Buck Lake Road.

There are over 5,000 homes in the Buck Lake area, ranging in size from a townhouse in Buckwood to the 60+ acre wooded homesteads in the east side of Leon County.

The properties on the west side of Buck Lake resembles the typical “family friendly” neighborhoods of northeast Tallahassee, with 3 and 4 bedroom houses, .15 - 1 acre lots, walking distance to schools, and active HOAs. The east side is more rural, attracting people who appreciate the privacy of larger lots and the natural beauty of old Florida without the rules and regulations of HOAs.

Buck Lake has long been a popular residential destination. It is close to both downtown Tallahassee and an I-10 entrance. The schools (WT Moore Elementary, Buck Lake Elementary and Chaires Elementary, Swift Creek Middle, Lincoln High) are highly rated. There are parks and open spaces for families and their pets. Several areas, primarily in the east, allow horses and other livestock. In recent years, corporate entities have also discovered the convenience of Buck Lake, bringing additional shopping, restaurants, and employment to the area.

Houses and Neighborhoods

About 25% of Buck Lake homes (~1300 homes) are in subdivisions that have been incorporated into Tallahassee city limits. These include the west side neighborhoods of Benjamin’s Run, Buckwood, Buckwood Cluster, Countryside at Benjamin’s Run, Easton, Easton Glen, Goose Creek, Jackson’s Gap, Observation Pointe, Orchard Walk, Starview, Stoney Creek Crossing, Sugar Mill, Swift Creek Woods and The Enclave. Adiron Woods and Elmwood Estates, near the intersection of I-10 and Mahan Drive, are also in city limits, with city-supplied utilities.

Most Buck Lake properties are located in “unincorporated Leon County.” Talquin Electric supplies their utilities, and many residents on the east side draw their water from an on-site well.

In between the more densely populated west side and the relatively sparsely populated east side, there are several attractive neighborhoods drawing from the best of both worlds. Lafayette Oaks, The Vineyards, Hill N Dale Estates, Oakfair and The Antlers, for example, offer larger homes on lots ranging from one to four acres. These neighborhoods feature rolling hills, stately oaks and other mature landscaping.

Shopping

A significant increase in stores and restaurants along Mahan Drive between Capital Circle NE and Buck Lake Road in recent years had made Buck Lake a more convenient place to live. “Big Box” stores Costco, WalMart and Bass Pro Shops occupy the Fallschase Village Center, and there are plans to add a movie theater, upscale restaurant and additional stores to make it one of Tallahassee’s largest open air shopping centers. On the northeast corner of the intersection of Capital Circle NE and Mahan Drive, Publix and Academy Sports anchor the Mahan Village, with other locations filled by GNC, Moe’s Southwest Grill, a Sally’s Beauty Supply, an upscale consignment store, a dry cleaners, banks, hair salons, and several eateries. Across the street, Lafayette Place offers additional stores, services, and restaurants.

Parks and Recreation

At the southern end of Pedrick Road, the JR Alford Greenway offers 800 acres of Open Space and Trails for Hikers, Mountain Bicyclists, and Equestrians. There is even ample parking for horse trailers. Chaires Community Park, at 4768 Chaires Cross Road, is located next to Chaires Elementary School. Its four Tennis Courts and two Basketball Courts are open to the public. There are also two standard Little League baseball fields, one T-Ball field, restrooms, and a large Community Center available for private functions. Chaires Community Park is also the starting point for many road bike rides organized by the Capital City Cyclists.

In 2011 the 12,000 SF Eastside branch of the Leroy Collins Library System opened at 1583 Pedrick Road, about 500 feet south of Mahan Drive. The library’s exterior resembles the design of the Mission San Luis visitor’s center. A woodsy walking path around a community lake adds to the serene and rustic nature of the location.

There really is a Buck Lake, most likely named for visiting deer. This 30-acre body of water lies between Mahan Drive and Buck Lake Road, about a mile east of the intersection of these roads. There is no public access to this lake, but its southernmost point is visible from Buck Lake Road if you look north while driving by Davis Drive.
