The Charles Schulz Philosophy

From An Email Titled "The Charles Schulz Philosophy"

Charles Schulz Philosophy ImageThe following is the Charles Schulz philosophy, from the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip (as sent to me in a viral email). I did nothing to check the validity of the source, it just made so much sense I thought it was worth spreading the message. It starts off with a few simple questions.

You don't have to actually answer the questions to "get" the Charles Schulz philosophy.

Just ponder on them.

Just read straight through, and you'll get the point..

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world. 2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners. 3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant. 4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize. 5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.... 6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point of the Charles Schulz philosophy is that none of us remember the headliners of yesterday.

These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields.

But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz from the Charles Schulz philosophy. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school. 2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time. 3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile. 4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special! 5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson of the Charles Schulz Philosophy

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials.. the most money... or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most!

I considered the Charles Schulz Philosophy and here are the answers that came to me at first reading. I am sure the list would broaden with more consideration.

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

I was very fortunate to have some great teachers along the way. My sixth grade English Teacher was "Mr." Mike Obrecht who taught his subject well, but he also taught me that every great person has a passion for what they do.

He joins a long list of professors at West Point who cared enough to tell their students to call them at home, call them at 2:00 in the morning, just do not fail the course work without giving them a chance to be involved. Now that's the Charles Schulz philosophy.

Great teachers make all the difference our world. Bob Schmidt belongs in this group as well. He was my Scout Master in Boy Scouts and I learned a lot of skills that I still use today.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

I am part of the greatest golf team that the Army Football Letter Winners Club has ever seen (smile).

Roy Tomlinson, Ron Rice, and James Brock are people I have come to lean on during the tough times. These were the first people I thought of when reading the Charles Schulz philosophy.

One epitomizes the true definition of "friend," one is crazy, and the other is the voice of reason. While none of them live in Tallahassee, the internet and the telephone keep them within reach and they are always there for me.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile. I could answer this question for hours. For simplicity, I'll name the first five that hit my mind
  • Mary Lou Manausa - My mother taught me I can do anything I set my mind to. If there is something that I really want, all I have to do is figure out how to get it, and then just do it. It's a powerfully simple lesson, but one that has fueled much of my drive as an adult.
  • Trent Manausa - My father taught me without saying a word. His dedication to family and hard work was taught in the schedule that he kept during my entire childhood. He worked crazy long hours, but was always there at scouting and sports events.
  • Jim Sauls was the first football coach who really reached me. His passion for the game (and for life) is abundantly clear anytime you talk to him. Everybody should want to go through life the way Coach Sauls "attacks" it. With hindsight, I could even imagine he wrote the Charles Schulz philosophy.
  • Gene Cox taught me that winning is not a part time job. Gene Cox was a winner at everything he did, from his faith, to his family, and to his work as the greatest high school football coach the state of Florida ever encountered.
  • Jim Young taught me the importance of the combination of belief and planning. He took over a losing group of Army Football players, taught us to believe in winning, and then created a plan (with detailed scheduling) for how we would get it done. And we did.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special!

This list has to start with my wife Michelle. Today is Michelle's birthday and I hope that she knows how special and appreciated she is by me. She is the foundation of my world.

My children are super, no matter my faults, they make me feel like a great and special father.

My brother Danny is the kind of guy you want by your side in difficult times. In the Army, we would say "he's the guy I want next to me in my foxhole," and I think his outlook on life is inspiring and in-line with the Charles Schulz philosophy.

My team of friends at Joe Manausa Real Estate is incredible too. Even as our market has dropped nearly 60%, they certainly make me feel "appreciated and special." They have stuck with me through some very tough times and I appreciate them greatly. We have many who espouse the Charles Schulz philosophy.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

This question seems a bid redundant, don't we all like to spend time with people who make us feel appreciated and special? But I would add a few of my golf buddies, like Mike Martin who is the world's second greatest Gin player of all time, or Mark Limcangco who can play liar's poker among thieves. Jeff Corson can always be talked into a game of "Wolf," where fortunately my limited golf ability still lets me compete with his incredible golf game. And this list could go on an on.

The Charles Schulz Philosophy is well founded.

We seem to spend so much time focusing on the things that do not matter when everything that does matter is all around us. As all viral email messages say .... pass this message on to others. Take the time to send this link (see the sharing buttons on the left) to everybody. The world needs more people who embrace the Charles Schulz philosophy.
